In general, a cedar shingle is sawn on both the top as well as the bottom and is thinner at the butt than a cedar shake.

A cedar shake is commonly split on one or maybe even both sides. There are some important exceptions to this, (tapersawn shakes are shakes sawn on both sides) depending on the particular manufacturing method and the dimensions of a given production. Cedar shakes can also be created by hand, but generally are mainly made using machines.
